Signet Ring

A Jewelry Classic

When it comes to jewelry with an engraved coat of arms, the signet ring is an absolute classic. In former times, primarily royals wore it. With the rise of civil heraldry in the 13th century, signet rings became more common amongst the bourgeoisie. The seal was often used to confirm the authenticity of documents and trade papers.

The Signet Ring is amongst the most traditional and distinctive ways of resembling a Coat of Arms in a piece of craftsmanship. Simultaneously, it provides the most personal way to live and become a part of a family tradition. The Signet Ring is ideal as a present for loved ones, for instance, the 21st birthday of a son or daughter.

Every Signet Ring of Pro Heraldica is unique. Our specialists will customize each ring under your specific wishes and demands. As the artistic engravings in these rings require a lot of experience, expertise, and good craftsmanship, every Pro Heraldica signet ring is hand-forged by our skilled staff.

By the way: To correctly wear a signet ring, always remember that the Coat of Arms must face outward, i.e., away from your body so others can see it.

Popular Signet Ring Models

The most popular ring models are made of precious metals (gold, platinum, or silver) and are equipped with a stone engraved coat of arms. Signet rings with a metal plate are also accepted. The engraved Coat of Arms is reversed (mirror-inverted) in order for it to come out correctly on the seal. Direct engravings on gold or platinum plate are especially favored among gentlemen.

All of our signet and crest rings are hand-forged, solidly built, and manufactured under any customer’s wishes. Every Pro Heraldica ring is of high technical and artistic quality to provide a worthy representation of your coat of arms. You will receive the choice between various metals of the highest quality: White gold, yellow gold, rose gold (each from 18 carats), or platinum. This is the pinnacle of individuality granted in the forging of a piece of jewelry and provides the opportunity to find just the right ring for every family member’s preference.

The Crest Ring

In contrast to signet rings, the crest ring is not designed for sealing. The distinguishing difference is measured based on how the coat of arms is placed on the ring. Often crest rings are equipped with a raised impression or relief that stands out from the ring’s surface. On the other hand, the engravings on signet rings are carved into the stone or precious metal, thus fulfilling their intended purpose of sealing documents and papers.

Positive Image of the Coat of Arms

For a fine gold inlay of the signet, a thin thread is placed inside the engraving. Therefore, the engraving is filled up again and produces an even surface. Another difference to a signet ring is that the crest ring shows a positive image of the coat of arms.

When choosing a ring with a precious stone, we recommend a version not meant for sealing as the round shape and the precious stone’s desired appearance cannot be preserved.

Lagenstein

The Lagenstein is an absolute classic when it comes to the stone choice of a signet ring. This stone consists of two layers and is available in the colors blue, red, and green. The top layer for the green and red layered stones are each white. As a result, the coat of arms is well distinguished once engraved, as it brings out the darker layers of the stone to the front.

Lapislazuli

The lapis lazuli (Arabic: bluestone) is quite popular through its distinguished deep blue color and small gold inclusions. Several minerals are represented in lapis lazuli, the majority of which is lazurite.

Jaspis

The jasper (Latin/Greek: speckled stone) is often referred to as the mother of all stones. The shape of the jasper shown here is green in color and contains reddish inclusions of iron oxide.

Onyx

The onyx is particularly impressive through its characteristically deep black color. It is especially suitable for a coat of arms engraving with gold inlay. It can also be used for customized engravings on gems.

Carneol

The carneol is distinctively red in color. Depending on the iron hydroxide or iron oxide density of the stone, this shade can be lighter or darker. With that said, all shades of orange, black-red, brown-red, or yellow-brown are possible with the possibility of including a banding.

The Engraving

The engravings of signet and crest rings differ in their ability to be used for sealing and those not used for sealing.

Engravings for Signet Rings

This type of engraving is the most popular on Signet Rings and looks particularly beautiful on a gemstone as the engraving stands out better through a darker layer. This makes the emblem of the coat of arms more visible and impressive.

This engraving is directly carved into a plate of precious metal.

Here, an inlay of gold varnish is burned into the engraving. The onyx stone is especially suitable for this method since its black color provides a beautiful contrast to the gold inlay. Please note that the gold inlay is going to wear off over time.

Engravings for Crest Rings

This is a highly exclusive way of engraving and results in a fine gold or silver embedding to lay out on the stone.

The background of the coat of arms is carefully cut out so the coat of arms appears to be standing out of the gemstone. This gives a better contrast between the stone and the coat of arms.

Manufacturing of a high-quality gold relief cast of your Coat of Arms, which is then attached to a stone or precious metal plate.

If you choose a precious stone for your ring, we recommend a non-sealing version. That is because only a slightly rounded shape can achieve the desired appearance of the stone. The engraving of the Coat of Arms or monogram is in the round precious stone.

Sealable Engravings

  • The Sealable Engravings of a Full Coat of Arms in Stone
This is the most popular engravings amongst sealable rings. The engravings come out particularly nicely with the Lagenstein stone in which the dark layer ensures that the engraving and coat of arms are brought out distinctively from within the stone.
  • The Sealable Engravings of a full Coat of Arms in  Vollwappens in Precious Metals
  • With this engraving, the coat of arms is directly engraved into a precious metal plate, which gives the ring a high-quality appearance.
  • Coat of Arms Engraving embedded with a burned-in Gold Varnish (deep cut)
  • Here the engraving is completed by blazing a gold varnish inlay into the ring’s design. This type of engravement is particularly matching with an Onyx stone. The stone’s black color allows for a refined contrast to the gold inlay. However, one must keep in mind that it is possible for the gold to erode over the years.

Non-Sealable Engravings

  • Coat of Arms Signet Ring with a Fine Gold Inlay
Firstly, the emblem is engraved into the stone and then filled with fine gold. As with every crest ring, the engraved coat is a raised impression of the coat’s image since they are not meant to seal documents or papers.
  • Gem Engravings on Stone
The gem is a fairly unique stone to apply an engraving to and must be carefully carved out of the stone. The term gem originally comes from the Latin root meaning precious metal and stands to reason the English reference to gemstones.
  • Casting onto Mounted Stones or Slabs (Refliefabguss)
When casting onto a stone or slab, our skilled goldsmiths ensure your coat of arms‘ high-quality inlay. The stones or slabs are mounted once they are cast into its sprue to ensure maximum accuracy and precision.
  • Coat of Arms Engraving with Precious Metals
When engraving with precious metals, we recommend using a non-sealable engraving method. With the slightly rounded shape of the stone, the desired appearance is brought into view. The requested coat or monogram is then engraved into the round shape of the precious metal.

Our Client Rituals

Many families embody rituals and traditions to be passed down from generation to generation. Such rituals can be seen with the Fuhr family where each family member receives their very own signet ring to their 25. birthday. You can read more about the Fuhr’s family ritual in our Blog Entry Here.
